The Brief Therapy Practice runs one day conferences, intended to highlight
the work of British practitioners making everyday use of solution focused thinking
in a variety of fields. They will show some of the most imaginative and innovative
adaptations of solution focused thinking to the everyday tasks of frontline professionals.
The two plenary presentations and a choice of three smaller workshops will
give evidence of the versatility of solution focused brief therapy and the creativity
of those professionals already drawing on solution focus for their inspiration.
Below are detailed descriptions of our forthcoming conferences. If you would

SOLUTIONS IN ORGANISATIONS - 5 December 2008
Successful organisations get the best out of their people! Successful organisations are also more enjoyable to work for and more appreciative of their staff. Solution Focus is an ideal
approach for the leader, coach, mediator, manager and consultant to adopt and to develop.
The SF way provides a disciplined approach to outcome-related activity at all levels of the organisation. By actively recognizing and appreciating the special and particular skills of staff a high level of cooperation is engendered and then harnessed to the organisation's purpose.
BRIEF is at the forefront of the application of Solution Focus within the organisational context and will present some of its ideas along with others who are currently engaged in creative, imaginative, indeed ground-breaking work in this field.
HIGH IMPACT COACHING - Chris Iveson
Coaching appears to be developing along the lines of long-term therapy with coaches seeming to engage clients in on-going programmes of coaching with very generalised aims.
BRIEF has been interested in keeping alive the spirit of minimalism and the idea of as few sessions as possible in the world of coaching. High Impact Coaching will often be a single session on a specific but crucial issue such as handling a difficult board meeting, attending an interview or the first day of a new job.
A slightly longer sequence might focus on a specific project such as putting a new team together, attracting new customers, implementing a new policy or managing an under-performing member of staff.
This presentation will introduce participants to a brief, effective and flexible conversational process that is associated with optimal performance.
Chris Iveson is one of the founders and Co-Directors of BRIEF. His voice has been distinctive and influential in shaping the world-wide development of the Solution Focused approach over
the past 15 years.
If you ask people about their 'best hopes' or talk about 'preferred futures' you are, perhaps unknowingly, drawing on his contribution to the field.
SOLUTION FOCUSED MEDIATION - in teams & organisations - Frederike O Bannink
Instead of focusing on the conflict, Solution Focused mediation asks: What would you rather have instead of the conflict? What difference would that make? What is already going well?
The focus is on the preferred future of the clients involved. The expertise of the Solution Focused mediator lies in asking questions to help clients in this regard. Whether clients are mandated or believe that the other is to blame, the SF mediator possesses the expertise to motivate clients to change.
The concept and methodology differs from other types of mediation. With this approach, the atmosphere remains positive, conversations can be shorter and more effective, ensuring that
solution focused mediation is also cost-effective.
With a background in Clinical Psychology, Fredrike is a Master of Dispute Resolution and a Mediator at the Amsterdam District Court. She is a trainer in Solution Focused coaching and in Solution Focused mediation and is the author of many books and articles on Solution Focused therapy, interviewing and mediation
In addition to the two plenary presentations there will be 10 workshops from which participants will be able to choose two to attend.
These workshops will relate to Action Learning, Organisational Change, Coaching, Leadership, Team Building and the fit between SF and Positive Psychology.
