The Brief Therapy Practice is situated in Newbury Street at the historic heart
of the City of London. It is on the margin of Smithfield Market, a 'smooth-field',
where meat and livestock have been traded throughout London's history (according
to Peter Ackroyd), a stone's throw from St Bartholemew's Hospital, London's first,
and almost within sight of St Bartholemew the Great, one of London's oldest churches,
dating back to 1123. |
It is where the annual Bartholemew's fair was held which became a symbol of disorder
and anarchy and lasted until 1855 when it "faded away". However this
is also an area of change and development. Newbury Street itself is framed at
one end by one of the towers of the Barbican Estate itself a modern classic and
recently granted listed status. The Barbican Centre is within 5 minutes walk.
Richard Rogers' new, and much admired, Lloyds building is close by and the Tate
Modern will be within easy walking distance simply by crossing the newly opened
Millennium Bridge, a route that will pass St Pauls Cathedral on the way, in turn
leading to the reconstructed 'Shakespeare's Globe' theatre
